Making Your Words Sell Without Being Pushy
If you’ve ever sat down to write a sales message to a new contact (maybe following a meeting or following them requesting your information) and found yourself scratching your head wondering if they’ll think you’re being too pushy, then here’s an approach you can use to make your note really personal.
The essence of this style of message is to write how you would to a close and trusted friend. This means talking directly to your reader in a conversational, yet respectful way. It’s possible to use this model more generically for a wider audience too (an example at the end) but it works best when you can afford the time to personalise each one.
The Basics
1) Make Your Subject/Headline Intriguing and Use Their Name
Some examples off the top of my head…
- Could This Suggestion Help You _____________ Sooner, {!firstname_fix} ?
- Everyone Can Do With A Little Extra Help Once In A While, {!firstname_fix}
- Could This Be Of Any Use {!firstname_fix}?
- I Saw This {!firstname_fix} & Immediately Thought of You
2) Pace Them By Saying Something True (PACE PHRASE) Then Make A Suggestion (LEAD PHRASE)
Sample phrases that work include…
- Now that you’ve [PACE PHRASE - eg "Read My Proposal"] you’re probably keen to [LEAD PHRASE - eg "Get Started On This Project"]
- You know how you were interested in [PACE PHRASE - eg "Copywriting"]? Well I’d like to invite you to [LEAD PHRASE - eg "Join My Ezine"]
- Remember that problem you were having with [PACE PHRASE - eg "Gaining More Clients"]? Well [LEAD PHRASE - eg "Read This Email Carefully"] for a possible solution.
- I know lots of my friends like you [PACE PHRASE - eg "Wish They Could Spend Less On Marketing"] so I’d like you to [LEAD PHRASE - eg "Consider My Suggestion"]
- Now that you’ve [PACE PHRASE - eg "Shown An Interest In Improving Business"] I was wondering if you’d like to [LEAD PHRASE - eg "Book Yourself A Place On My Next Workshop"]
3) Introduce the benefits of going along with your suggestion and use their name again
Keep to specific benefits to your friend and avoid hype…
- When you _________ {firstname_fix!} you’ll ___________________
- When you do, {!firstname_fix}, I reckon you’ll be free of your ____________ within a couple of months.
- Imagine what it would be like to _____________ again {!firstname_fix}? If you give this a try it could happen sooner than you think.
- I reckon this could solve your ______________ problem really easily.
- If you do this now, {!firstname_fix} then you’ll never have to ______________ again.
4) Your Call To Action
Be very specific about your Most Wanted Response (MWR) and what you want them to do next. “So” and/or “Why Not” are good link phrases…
- So/Why Not… Click This Link To Find out More
- So/Why Not… Give Me A Call And We Can Arrange A Chat
- So/Why Not… Read The Enclosed Proposal Carefully and Call Me When You’re Ready
- If You _________________ Then You’ll ______________________
